Frequently asked questions
Turf questions, answered plainly.
These are the questions DFW homeowners and property managers ask most often while comparing artificial turf products, installers and project scopes. Every property is different, so your on-site estimate will address the details that apply to your space.
Planning and installation
How long does artificial turf installation take?
The schedule depends on the size of the area, access, removal, drainage work, curves or specialty features, weather and site conditions. After seeing the property, we can provide a project-specific scope and expected timeline.
What goes underneath artificial turf?
Most installations require removal and grading followed by a properly compacted aggregate base. Drainage, edge restraint and the exact build-up vary by the property and whether the space is a lawn, pet area, play area or putting green.
How does artificial turf drain during heavy rain?
A well-planned system combines permeable turf with proper grading, a compacted base and a clear path for water to leave the area. Because every property handles runoff differently, drainage should be evaluated before installation.
Can artificial turf be installed around a pool or over concrete?
Turf can work well around pools when drainage, elevations and transitions are planned carefully. Installation over concrete or other hardscape may be possible in some applications, but the surface condition, slope, drainage and attachment method need to be evaluated first.
What happens to existing sprinkler heads?
Sprinkler heads inside the turf area are typically capped, removed or relocated as part of the agreed scope. Irrigation serving trees, beds or remaining natural grass may still need to stay active.
Do I need HOA approval?
Many communities require approval. Check your current guidelines before installation and ask what product, color, drainage or site-plan details the association needs.
Everyday use and performance
Does artificial turf get hot in Texas?
It can heat up in direct sun. Shade, product choice, infill, time of day and nearby hard surfaces all affect surface temperature. We discuss heat honestly during planning so you can choose the right application and use habits.
Is artificial turf safe for children and pets?
Safety depends on the specific turf, infill and application. We can review available manufacturer information and recommend a system designed for how the area will be used. Like other outdoor surfaces, turf can become hot in direct Texas sun.
Can turf work for dogs?
Yes. A dog-friendly installation should prioritize drainage, suitable turf and infill, secure edges and a practical cleaning routine. The number and size of dogs and how they use the yard should guide the system.
What is infill, and why is it used?
Infill is material worked between the turf fibers. Depending on the system, it can add ballast, support the blades and help the surface perform as intended. The right infill is different for landscaping, pets, play areas and putting greens.
Does artificial turf fade in the sun?
Quality turf products are designed for outdoor UV exposure, but appearance can change over time. Product specifications and manufacturer warranty terms vary, so review the exact coverage for the turf you select.
How long does artificial turf last?
There is no single lifespan for every project. Product quality, installation, sun exposure, traffic, pet use and maintenance all matter. Manufacturer warranty length is useful information, but it is not the same as a guaranteed service life.
Care, repairs and ownership
Is turf really maintenance free?
No. It removes mowing and routine lawn care, but leaves and debris should be removed, high-use fibers brushed, pet areas cleaned and edges and drains kept clear.
Does artificial turf need water?
It does not need irrigation to stay green. You may still use water occasionally to rinse dust or pet areas, and nearby trees, beds and natural landscaping may continue to need irrigation.
Can weeds grow through artificial turf?
Proper removal, base preparation and edge work greatly reduce weeds, but windblown seeds can still grow in surface debris or along edges. Regular cleanup helps prevent that growth.
Can damaged artificial turf be repaired?
Some localized seam, edge or surface damage can be repaired. The best approach depends on the cause and extent of the damage, and matching an older or weathered turf product may be difficult.
What affects artificial turf project cost?
Area, access, removal, disposal, drainage, base preparation, product choice, infill, edges, curves and specialty applications all affect a measured estimate.
What warranty information should I ask for?
Ask for the workmanship terms and the selected product manufacturer's warranty in writing. Confirm what is covered, how long coverage lasts, any maintenance requirements and exclusions before approving the project.
